See How It Works - with CA on CD™

Step 1 - Search Using CA on CD

As you enter CA on CD, you are presented with a number of choices for finding the information you need.

You decide to Search using keywords and define your topic in terms of a few appropriate words. In this case, we have entered Spider silk and gene*.

Now click Search.

Step 2 - CA on CD Retrieves Candidate Answers

CA on CD found two answers that contain all the keyword terms as you entered them. By double-clicking the title name of interest, you will retrieve the abstract and indexing for this document. In this case, we have selected the second answer.

Step 3 - Expanding your search results to the Web

As you review the retrieved abstract and its indexing you can see that it contains your required search terms. At this point, you are curious to see what the web has to offer on this topic. Click the eScience button on the toolbar.

Step 4 - Searching with eScience®

The eScience search page is displayed. Note that your search terms are automatically transferred to the eScience search box. You now have the option of quickly extending your search to the free resources of the web using the capabilities of the ChemIndustry.com, Google, or ChemGuide search engines. In this instance we have chosen to extend the search using Google.

Note some of the other options that eScience offers:

  • news services such as the New York Times and Reuters, all with a focus on science and technology
  • science-related portal sites such as Chemistry.org and BioSpace.com
  • electronic publications such as CA SELECTS on the Web™ and the collection of journals from ACS Publications

Step 5 - Web Search Results

Here is a portion of the search results retrieved by Google. You can now scroll down the list to find a title of interest or return to CA on CD and continue your research there.
